The first few pics shown here are what I was able to accomplish without spending a cent. All materials used were stuff I had laying around the house from other projects.940941942943
The diorama measures 47 by 26 inches and was with four slabs of styrofoam, grass sheet, duct tape, paint. newspaper, modeling clay, play doh. a bunch of tiny nails, cardboard, and some sky background. Keep scrolling down to see this project evolve.

All the photos with the water are after I spent about $66 on four water kits, one bag of moss, one foilage kit, and a bunch of bottles of both paint and glue. The overall goal of this is to have a diorama of what can be either Cobra Island or Rio Lindo depending upon which era I want do a dio of. I am trying to base this as much as I can on the jungle in the movie Predator which I have watched about 8 times since starting this project. I figure a Central/South American based jungle would work for either Cobra Island or Rio Lindo.

This is a work in progress and I will post more pics as I progress. I hope to add trees, vines, maybe another hill, and to re-do the sky background to a night background and to wrap it around the sides. Hope you have enjoyed the pics so far and thanks for looking.

I have yet to add anything new, but I did adjust my camara settings and got some pretty good pics. I found one setting that gives my sky background a dusk like effect.

After reading ARAH issue 211 I could not resist setting up Cover Girl in a scene I found to be pretty funny. Oddly enough she is a pretty photogenic action figure.

Thanks, I am taking the same approach to putting together this dio as you did yours, by waiting for coupons. Also if you are looking to expand yours I am finding pet stores have alot good stuff for jungle dios in the fish tank section, but they are usually pretty expensive.

Good to know! There is a store on Georgesville Road (west Columbus) called Flower Factory where I picked up a lot of useful stuff, sometimes they have coupons and clearance. Try Joann Fabric, Michaels arts and crafts, and maybe even the Dollar Store too. My dio is 6' by 6' foot currently. I slowly pieced it together over 18 months. Yours is coming together very well!

I have been meaning to check out that exact Flower Factory. Michaels has been my go to store thus far and I have checked out Joann and several Dollar stores as well. The hardest part with the jungle plants is finding the right shade of green, I have been watching some Nam movies over the last few nights and everything is a bright green. Most of what I am finding in stores is more of a forrest green.

Here is a look at the 2.0 version of my Jungle diorama. I screwed the water up the first time, which was okay because I had wanted to redo it anyway, as the first body of water looked more like an estuary. Now it looks more like a part of a larger body of water.

I am interested in making dips like this (if I can figure out where they will go) but I am curious, does the moss/dirt ruin he figures at all? Does it not get I. Between the joints or stain the feet or get stuck in the battle stand holes in the feet?

And that is why we collect these little 4" plastic men. To do totally cool stuff like that!!

Awesome work on that dio Croc!!

ps- Did you really cut a Croc Master in half for the "water rising" shots or did youuse some really fancy camera angles?

I used a grass mat and painted it and added bits of moss as it dried. I wanted the board to be flat so I could pose as many Joes as possible. Also no, nothing gets stuck to any of the figures feet or joints.

Yes, I did saw a Croc Master in half just for the dio. I had an extra Croc Master I used a part for a custom on and really had no other use for the figure. Nice to turn a figure in my parts box into something useful. Also if you look close at that Croc Masters arms you can see drips of water, for that effect I used Woodland Scenics water effects.

Thanks, it cost about $55 to redo it. However, I did get those plants from my Uncle who used to own a Wedding shop in West Jeff as a gift after showing him some pics of what I was working on.
